Regulations on the revision of Regulations on the Use of Food Additives in the European Union

In its ongoing regulation and evaluation of the regulations on the use of food additives, the EU has always placed the safety of food for its citizens at the highest priority. After careful consideration and evaluation, based on food safety considerations, Regulation (EU) 2023/2379 will be officially issued on 3 October 2023, and the Regulation on the use of food additives (EC) No. 1333/2008 will be revised critically.

Amendment of coreStearyltartrate (E483) will come into force as regulations and will no longer be listed as approved food additives. The original stearyltartrate (E483) has been widely used in a variety of food products, such as heat-treated fermented dairy products, bread, baking products and so on.

Revised backgroundA series of evaluations carried out by the European Union found that current toxicological data on hard flavonoid acetate (E483) are insufficient to fully demonstrate its safety as a food additive. In this context, in order to ensure food safety for EU citizens and avoid potential risks, the European Union decided to take precautionary measures to remove it from the list of approved food additives before further scientific data was provided.

Date of entry into force20th from the date of publication of the Official Gazette of the European Union.

Impact on relevant companiesWe understand that this amendment could have an impact on the food-producing enterprises concerned. In this context, the EU will provide a transitional period and technical support to help enterprises find safe alternatives and ensure a smooth transition in the production process. We encourage enterprises to actively communicate with relevant institutions in the coming period to jointly ensure food safety and the health of citizens.
